A bitter espresso can ruin your latte. Luckily, bitterness has simple root causes. Fix these five issues and your espresso will taste sweeter, richer, and smoother.
⭐ 1. Your Grind Is Too Fine
A very fine grind leads to over-extraction, causing bitterness.
Fix:
Try a slightly coarser grind.
If you’re using a burr grinder, adjust it 1–2 clicks coarser.
⭐ 2. Your Shot Is Running Too Long
A long shot = harsh espresso.
Fix:
Aim for:
- 25–30 seconds
- 1:2 espresso ratio (18g in → 36g out)
If it’s running long, your grind is too fine.

Cheap machines overheat and burn coffee.
Fix:
Look for machines with temperature stability, or flush the group head before brewing.
